
MIchael Zavros residency in Shangahi
Michael Zavros has just completed a one-month residency at Shanghai University's Public Art Coordination Centre. During his stay he combined studio work (new paintings) with exploratory visits to other workshops able to assist with sculpture projects. His partner Alison Kubler (co-author of Art & Fashion in the 21st Century, Thames & Hudson) also gave a lecture on the art & fashion interface to students at Shanghai University.

John Reynolds at the McCahon House
John Reynolds is at the McCahon House for a two week stay to undertake further research for his ongoing exploration of Colin McCahon’s ‘missing hours’ when McCahon tragically went missing in the Botanical Gardens on the eve of the launch of his 1984 Sydney Biennale satellite retrospective I Will Need Words. Reynolds’ describes his project as part missing person’s archive, part pilgrimage, part art historical vagabondage.

Rebecca Baumann in Superpositions at Artspace
Rebecca Baumann has been commissioned to make over Artspace Sydney by painting each gallery wall a different colour for the exhibition Superposition of three types which explores different approaches to colour abstraction. The exhibition opens on 10 February.

Laith McGregor awarded HIAP residency, Helsinki
Laith McGregor will take up a residency at the Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP) this year. Founded in 1998, HIAP is the largest residency programme in the Nordic and Baltic region and the studios are on Suomenlinne Island, a world heritage site. McGregor's residency is funded by the Australia Council for the Arts.

Daniel Crooks video selected for Art Basel Hong Kong Film 2017
Daniel Crooks' video The Subtle Knife (2016) has been selected for the 2017 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong Film by curator Li Zenhua. The work was also exhibited at Starkwhite earlier this year in Daniel's first solo show with us titled Vanishing Point.

Starkwhite at Art Basel Hong Kong 2017
Starkwhite will present a group show at Art Basel Hong Kong (2017) exploring various approaches to composing or choreographing color, motion and movement. It will feature the work of pioneer experimental filmmaker Len Lye (NZ/US), along with works by contemporary practitioners Rebecca Baumann (AUS), Daniel Crooks (AUS/NZ) and Alicia Frankovich (DE/NZ), who are all represented by Starkwhite. Like our recent exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong 2016, it will provide an historical context for a slice of contemporary practice in the region, this time by a group of innovative Australian and New Zealand-born artists who push boundaries in their work and view Lye as a source of inspiration. Our presentation is with the generous support of Creative New Zealand.

On the Origin of Art opens at MONA
Fiona Pardington is in the exhibition On the Orgin of Art which opens this weekend at the Museum of Old and New, Hobart. Her works are in a section curated by Brian Boyd, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of English, University of Auckland. Read more…

Recent acquisitions
The Dunedin Public Art Gallery (DPAG) has acquired Seung Yul Oh's interactive sculpture Periphery, seen here at Art Basel Hong Hong (2013) in the Encounters section curated by Yuko Hasegawa. The work also featured in the survey exhibition MOAMOA (2014) organised by the DPAG and the City Gallery Wellington.

Matt Henry: Analogues
Upstairs at Starkwhite we are showing Matt Henry's Analogues to 14 October. Previously shown at Goya Curtain in Tokyo, the works in the exhibition appropriate specific graphic motifs found in the artist’s collection of video and audio media.

Anthony Byrt book launch
On Thursday 22 September, 5 -7.30pm, we are co-hosting with AUP the launch of Anthony Byrt’s new book THIS MODEL WORLD: TRAVELS TO THE EDGE OF CONTEMPORARY ART, published by Auckland University Press.
Anthony Byrt is an award-winning critic and journalist. He is a regular writer for Metro and contributes to leading international art magazines Artforum International and frieze. In 2013 he was the Critical Studies Fellow at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan and was New Zealand’ Reviewer of the Year at the 2015 Canon Media Awards. He lives in Auckland with his wife and son. This is his first book.

Coming up at Starkwhite
In 1984 Colin McCahon tragically went missing on the eve of his survey exhibition I WILL NEED WORDS, staged as a satellite show of the 1984 Biennale of Sydney, In his new project WalkWithMe… John Reynolds speculated on the passible nature of those missing hours. The exhibition opens on Tuesday 30 August 6 – 8 pm.

Recent acquisition: Michael Zavros' Bad Dad
The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art Foundation has purchased Michael Zavros' Bad Dad for the gallery's permanent collection. Considered to be one of the artist's finest (and most famous) paintings, Bad Dad was a finalist in the 2013 Archibald Prize (Art Gallery of New South Wales) and featured in the exhibition Bad Dad at Starkwhite in 2014 and in our solo show of Zavros' work at Art Basel Hong Kong 2015.
