Richard Maloy's long-duration video
On Friday 22 December – the longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere – Starkwhite will screen Richard Maloy’s video Things I have Seen, (14hr 03min 32sec), an outcome of his three-month residency at the Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo from May – July 2017. The video screens from 5.28am (sunrise) to approximately 7.30pm. The artist wishes to acknowledge the support of Youkobo Art Space Tokyo, Asia New Zealand Foundation and Creative New Zealand

Michael Zavros limited edition book
We are delighted to announce the release of a new book on Michael Zavros, published by Manuscript in association with Starkwhite and Philip Bacon Galleries, and designed by Inhouse. Gavin Hipkins: The Domain at the Dowse Art Museum
The survey exhibition Gavin Hipkins: The Domain runs at the Dowse Art Museum to 25 March 2018. Curated by Courtney Johnston the exhibition surveys a range of media used by Hipkins ranging from slides, through photographs to the moving image. Gordon Walters: New Vision at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery
The survey exhibition Gordon Walters: New Vision runs at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery until 8 April and then travels to the Auckland Art Gallery for a mid 2018 showing. The exhibition is accompanied by a substantial contribution and writing by the three exhibition curators Lucy Hammonds, Laurence Simmons and Julia Waite, along with pieces by other writers including Thomas Crowe. Coming up
Our next show by Martin Basher, runs from 6 October to 4 November 2017. First presented as a one-week exhibition at the University of Auckland’s George Fraser Gallery to mark the end of his doctoral studies, this sculptural installation follows Hawaiian Tropic at Starkwhite (1-26 August 2017) where the artist presented a new series of landscape-based paintings revealing the formal genesis of the ultra-saturated, hard-edge abstractions for which he is best known. The two exhibitions situate Basher’s painting and sculptural work in the lineage of display-based artistic practices.

Starkwhite at Art Basel Hong Kong 2018
Starkwhite will present a two-person exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong 2018, featuring Fiona Pardington (NZ) and Michael Zavros (AUS). This will be our fifth consecutive presentation at ABHK and follows The Immortalisation of Billy Apple in the inaugural edition of the fair (2013), Gordon Walters: Koru Paintings (2014), a solo show by Michael Zavros (2015), a group show – Fiona Pardington, Gordon Walters and Arnold Manaaki Wilson (2016), and In Motion – a group show with Len Lye, Rebecca Baumann Alicia Frankovich and Grant Stevens (2017).

Starkwhite at Sydney Contemporary
We presented a two-person exhibition at this year's edition of Sydney Contemporary – photographs by Fiona Pardington (NZ) and paintings by Michael Zavros (AUS), and three of our artists – Richard Maloy, Grant Stevens and Clinton Watkins – were included in the Video Contemporary section curated by Serena Bentley.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales has just opened Out of the Ordinary, an exhibition of works by Australian and New Zealand artists who engage with everyday materials and imagery in surprising and transformative ways. The lecture has been organized through a partnership between the City Gallery Wellington, the Elam School of Fine Arts (University of Auckland) and Starkwhite. Laith McGregor amongst finalists for $50,000 prize
Laith McGregor is one of five finalists for this year's Sidney Myer Fund Australia Ceramics Award. The winner of the $50,000 acquisitive prize will be announced on 17 June at the opening of an exhibition of the finalists work at the Shepparton Art Museum.

Nature at its Queerest
Contemporary HUM has published Nature at its Queerest, Ulrike Gerhardt's essay in response to Alicia Frankovich's solo exhibition at the Kunstverein Dusseldorf OUTSIDE BEFORE BEYOND, curated by Eva Birkenstock. HUM is a new online publication dedicated to documenting New Zealand projects abroad.

Over and Over Again – The Legacy of Gordon Walters
Tina Barton will present Over and Over Again – The Legacy of Gordon Walters at the Auckland Art Gallery auditorium on Wednesday 17 May from 12 – 1.30pm. Her lecture is part of a post-graduatate seminar series presented by the Elam School of Fine Arts and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. The lecture is open to the public.
